GI Girls - Race for Life 2024
Posted on June 03, 2024
On Sunday 2nd June, 10 of the Global Infrastructure Girls took part in the Race for Life 5K in aid of Cancer Research UK. They managed to raise an amazing amount of £3333.00 with the help from their families, friends, colleagues, suppliers and local businesses.
In 2016, our Quality Technician Joanna MacLean received her cancer diagnosis so the girls took part in their first Race for Life whilst Joanna supported them from the side lines. This year, Joanna was delighted to join them run this year's race to raise the vital funds for CRUK.
Joanna shares a little bit about her story: "I had never heard of Hodgkin's Lymphoma prior to my diagnosis. After multiple visits to my GP, with what I know now to be common symptoms of HL; fatigue, night sweats, itchy skin, fever, persistent cough, shortness of breath and finally for me a swollen lymph node in my neck. Embarrassed by my persistent visits to my GP, I almost didn’t mention the lump in my neck. Thankfully I did, later that day I found myself at Raigmore to undergo further tests and 6 weeks later on a course of chemotherapy for 6 months.
I feel very fortunate to have come through the other side. Without charities like CRUK, I and many others would not be here today. There is still so much more work to be done to help those without a cure which makes events like this and the money we raise so important.
We also very sadly lost Katherine Mackay, our Accountant in 2019. We will be thinking about her on the day and many others who have loved ones that have been affected by cancer."
