Career Pathways
David Macdonald, Managing Director
When I left school, I secured a job with Tulloch Civil Engineering and attended Inverness college on a block release program to obtain an ONC/HNC. This led to numerous jobs within Tulloch from Engineer through to Ops Director. I completed numerous projects on my journey including Fort William Auction Mart, Inshes Retail Park in Inverness, various private developments, and Scottish water projects.
From here, the Global Infrastructure journey began with Alan Tolmie and Iain Henderson, starting out as Mansfield Construction in 2009 with an initial turnover of £3m in our first year, reaching £40m this year, and with further growth projected in the years ahead.
As Managing Director, this progression was a result of working hard, seizing opportunities that came my way, and also a touch of good luck! My responsibilities involve the day-to-day management of people and the implementation of the board-approved strategy. My primary focus is to inspire and motivate the team, while fostering the right culture.
The aspect I love most about Construction and Civil Engineering is witnessing the accomplishments that stem from initial stages while collaborating within a team. There is a sense of achievement seeing a project start as a field and end up as a end product you initially saw on a drawing.
For anyone considering a career in Construction and Civil Engineering, I'd advise: Enjoy it, be part of the team, and work hard. Additionally, for young individuals unsure about their career path, I recommend finding a job that you enjoy and motivates you.
