Girls in Engineering Day

Posted on June 12, 2024

Last month, our Compliance Manager Rheanna Urquhart attended Developing the Young Workforce "Girls in Engineering" day at Plockton High School with 40 of their new 2nd, 3rd and 4th years. Alongside female engineers from our clients SSEN Transmission and Balfour Beatty plc and another Highland contractor RJ McLeod (Contractors) Limited, the girls learned about the upcoming works of taking power across the Kylerhea Strait which is part of the Fort Augustus to Skye 132kV Reinforcement.

The group learned about ground conditions, foundations, testing and constructing electricity towers and power lines - and had to design and build towers and their foundations to get across the "gap", taking tension on the "lines" and safely clearing the "boats" beneath. They had to think about the environmental issues and there were overall prizes for best sustainability and innovation.

This was a great opportunity for the girls to learn about careers in Construction, and specifically Civil Engineering. With this imminent work on their doorstep, maybe we'll see some of these future engineers climbing towers, inspecting concrete pours or project managing one day - we hope we left a good impression
